About Add Header and Footer to PDF
This tool adds text to the header (top) and footer (bottom) of PDF pages, with six independent slots — left, center, and right for each — so you can add page numbers, dates, filenames, or any custom label. Choose which pages to apply it to, adjust font size, color, and margin, and preview the result before downloading. Everything runs locally in your browser; your file is never uploaded anywhere.
Features:
- Six independent text slots: header and footer, each with left, center, and right positions
- Dynamic placeholders for page number, total pages, date, and filename
- Apply to all pages, a custom page range, or skip the cover page
- Live preview with overflow warnings so text never overlaps
How to Add a Header and Footer to a PDF
- Upload the PDF you want to edit
- Type your header and footer text into any of the six slots
- Adjust font size, color, margin, and which pages to apply it to
- Click "Add and download" to get your finished PDF
Frequently Asked Questions
What placeholders can I use in my text?
{page} for the current page number, {total} for the total page count, {date} for today's date, and {filename} for the document's file name. Combine them freely, for example "Page {page} of {total}".
Can I add a header or footer to only some pages?
Yes. Enter a page range like "1-3, 5" in the Pages field, or leave it blank to apply to every page. You can also skip the first page entirely, which is useful for cover pages.
Does my file get uploaded anywhere?
No. The header and footer are added entirely in your browser using JavaScript — your PDF never leaves your device.
Will the text overlap my existing content?
The tool warns you if your header or footer text is likely to overlap itself — for example, if the left and center text are both too long for the page width. It does not check against your PDF's existing body content, so leave enough margin if your document already has header or footer text near the edges.
Can I change the font, size, or color of the text?
You can adjust font size, choose from four preset colors, and control the margin from the page edge. The font itself is a fixed Helvetica-style typeface for reliable, wide character support.
What if my text uses accented or special characters?
The available font supports standard Western characters (WinAnsi encoding). If a character can't be encoded, the tool shows a warning and won't apply the header or footer until you remove or replace it.
