Why this matters

Discord recommends uploading avatars and custom emoji at 512×512, even though it displays them much smaller — around 128×128 for a standard avatar thumbnail and even smaller for emoji in chat. The extra resolution matters because Discord's own client re-scales the image for retina displays, larger profile views, and emoji picker previews; uploading something already small and low-resolution looks visibly soft once Discord scales it back up.
